AOD in my 72?

Post by sgt_fixit »

Great info... more needed... am attempting to drop an AOD in behind my 289 in a 72 F-100. It currently has 3 on tree. here is my plan... am asking for a "sanity" check and any info or tips from the populace here. I do admire that you folks are willing and have the know how to share!

1. remove 2 part drive shaft
2. remove 3 on tree and associated clutch actuating parts
3. remove flywheel/clutch bearing
4. install new flex plate
5. install AOD with new x-member located and Lokar shifter
6. have "donor" shaft grafted to rear existing shaft/ install
7. install auto knockdown cable and hardware
8. Drive the snot out of it!

Anyone have experience here and want to share? I'd like to be able to shift at column, but haven't found auto column with manual steering truck yet. Thanx... Sgt_fixit

First things first if your engine is hopped up then you want your tranny strong enough to mate to it or you'll be replacing tranny's in no time. I am not completly sure but I believe you want to use the c4 cross member and move it the right distance to acomidate the lenght of the aod. As far the cables and connections you pretty much have it nailed. Good luck :)

The C6 and the AOD are about the same length. C6 crossmember will work for sure.

Also, as far as a column, an early (like 67-early 69) power steering truck will work also, as long as the steering box is a Bendix box as opposed to the Ford/Saginaw box.

Thanx... engine is not hopped up at all. It's an 289 out of a 66 mustang. Was in really bad shape when I got it. Was jumping rope with it's own timing chain. haha I'm just trying to make it driveable. I'm currently reading ALL the tech articles on PWR steering. Anyone have a PWR steering column they want to get rid of? I'll head to the junk yard in the next month or so to gather parts!

I went from a 3 speed, to a c6, to an AOD, a c4 and finally back to a c6 with the same trany cross-member. Just slid it back and forth a couple of times. lol
With the AOd in there you can go to a one piece drive-shaft also if you wanted. It is on the edge of being too long but mine worked fine with no vibrations after being balanced

well it's like a C4 with an overdrive. so yes. with an AOD, and the right rearend gears you could probably get 15-20mpg out of a 289, i know you can get 17-20 with a 300

I did'nt get any better mileage with one. I had the AOD behind a 351w with 3.70 gears and got the best of about 13.-14 mpg. Tried 3.25 gears and it got worse. I am running a 460-c6 with 3.0 gears right now and getting AT LEAST as good if not better mileage.
I need to check it but can;t get a full tank run out of it without 2 or 3 wide open blasts out of it. lol
