3.03 trans swap for a 4 speed

Post by 71 LONG BED »

I hope this doesn't sound like to much of a dumb question.
I want to replace my 3.03 trans with a 4 speed. Is there one that is easier to swap in than the others?
I need to do something soon because second gear is getting pretty loud lately. I don't want to make it a huge wallet draining project, though. If there is nothing easy than I will just rebuild my 3.03. Thanks, John.

3.03 would be your rearrend differential gearing?? Transmission would probably be easier to just swap in a good one.

he's talking about the ford 3.03 three speed transmission. it's a 3spd manual.

I pulled one out of a '71 years ago, and installed a NP435 as a direct bolt-in. didn't change anything but the tranny.

EDIT: mine was converted to a floor shift previously. you may have to change the floor tunnel pan to get the access hole.

I swapped my 3.03 for what I beleive to be a TOD. It's a small aluminum housed 4spd over drive. The mounts, bolt up, and drive shaft are all direct swap. These came behind early 80's f-100's mostly with inline 6's.
