swb rear frame crossmembers

Post by tybob81 »

On my 68 I found a tank that will fit between the frame rails of my short bed, but it is a few inches longer than the area between the two rear cross members. My question is I thought it would be alright to move the farthest rear cross member back a few inches to make the tank fit, but my father said that the cross members were put in line with the spring hangers for a reason and moving the back cross member would make the frame very weak. I think not because it is only 3-4 inches. So before we have a family feud and I mess my frame up I would ask all of you here what you think I should do. This is the only tank I have found that has a in tank fuel pump to support fuel injection.

You're both right. Between the hangers is the optimum for strength but moving them a few inches in either direction won't hurt if you're not putting out massive hp. If you do have a lot of muscle you need to box it anyway.

Thats what I thought. The truck wont ever see any heavy loads in the bed. The only thing it will be hauling is booty.
