Overdrive Transmission

Post by ejgator »

Could one of the overdrive gurus look at http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... AMEWA%3AIT

I need opinions on whether this would fit my 68 with 360. One of the pictures shows T 860 cast into the housing.

What do y'all think?

Thanks,
Gator

With the right bellhousing it is possable but that one looks a litle too rusty to me.i'd go drop 125-250 at a junk yard before i ever bought thta one off of ebay.

The tranny should work with your 360, just get an FE bell housing.

The biggest things that concern me are the bad solenoid, and having to take his word for the condition of the tranny.

Also shipping on something like that would kill you.

Those things are HEAVY.

Yeah, he says $90 for shipping anywhere in the continental US, but the bid is currently $50 and the reserve not met. You guys think a reasonable price at a salvage yard would be $150-$200?

Now I'm confused about the bellhousing. :hmm: Isn't a 360 an FE? It's basically a 390 with a shorter stroke, right? :?

That is correct.

The 360,390,427,and 428's are all of the FE family of motors.

Then why would I need to get an FE bellhousing?

You need an FE bellhousing to get the tranny to match up to your engine.
Most manual trannies have a removable bellhousing so that different engine families could use the same tranny.

Yup. I guess I didn't know you had a 360 already.

unless current trans is the C6 then its bell housing is perm. fror the FE's i thought the 352 was also a n FE?

And yes a reasonable price would be 120-200.00 cuase i know a c6 for an fe is around 400.00 here new/rebuilt new.

Yeah, thanks. I started the thread specifying a 360, but failed to note that it is 3 speed manual column shift. I think I'm clear now.

I don't have many salvage yards in the area with these trucks, but I think I'll try locally instead of the ebay offer.

Thanks, everybody.

Also some car trannys will bolt to the same bell housings as the trucks.

So if you have an fe bell housing that bolts to your current trans just find one that bolts up to the same pattern as the current trans

The truck bellhousing is 7/16" deeper than the car bellhousing. This means any FE car manual tranny (Toploader included) will have a problem with it's input nose engaging into the pilot shaft. I have heard of a way around this though. Instead of using an FE tranny, use the small block trannies (Toploader included). They all have a longer input nose and it engages perfectly.
