anyone know how to i.d. my differential by any of the numbers on a dana 60?
the tag reads: D3TA-(Y, i think)4
683381-3
i know the ratio and understand the year/truck/chassis, but not the sequence that follows.
where would it indicate whether it's locking? and what does the bill of materials indicate?
thanks for any help,
eli

re: dana 60 i.d.
I'm assuming the ID tag is no longer on this Dana? It should look something like this:
The tag is held on by the two left-hand cover bolts. The tag on mine lists the ratio as "3 L 54", which means it's a locking 3.54:1 ratio. (L = locking).
Normally you can go straight to the Dana site at http://www2.dana.com/expert/wc.dll?cvsp~debill~search and enter your Bill of Materials number into their search engine which will tell you what it's used for. However, it doesn't show that number. One problem might be the number you posted. All my information states that the number always starts with '60' or '61'. However, changing your '8' to a '0' or a '1' doesn't return any results either, so I really don't know what to tell you. I even tried deleting the '-3' at the end, but still got no results.
However, I'm getting my info from websites discussing the FRONT Dana 60, so those numbers could be different...however, you'd still think that the Dana website search engine would return something. (You ARE talking about a rear differential, correct?)

My 73-79 Ford parts slide shows a 603381-3 as being a D3TA-YA 3.54 ratio non locking for a model F250 --Probably from a 1973 or 74 truck It wouldn't be from anything older than a 1973

re: dana 60 i.d.
If it's original, the VIN tag number will tell if it's locking or not.
If it's two numbers, it's non locking. If it's a letter and a number,
it's locking. IE: a dana 60 3.54 locking could be a "C1".
A "71" is the same gear, but not locking. But the letter/number
could vary...IE my dana 60 4.10 is a "B4". They list non locking as a "73" and also a "24", and there could be others. Of course, normally using the tag off the rear would be best...But the VIN alone will tell if it's locking, assuming it's original. MK

If you look at the following PDF (Page 98 ) at http://www2.dana.com/pdf/X510-8.PDF it shows 603195-18 as a '71-'72 F250 3/4-ton HD 4x4 pickup with 4.10 gears and non-locking.
