Im going to give you what the Chilton manual says:
"Put the shifter in neutral, and go under the truck to where the steering column shift levers are (at the bottom of the steering column). There should be locating holes in those levers where you correct the alignment by inserting a 3/16 drill bit. Align the levers with the locating hole. Leave the drill bit in position.
*If your shift rods have threaded sleeves; adjust the sleeves so that they enter the levers on the tranny (in the neutral position) 'easily'. Then lengthen the rods out 7 turns of the sleeves and reinsert them at that point.
*If your shift rods are slotted; loosen the attaching nut, make sure the tranny shift levers are in neutral position, then retighten the attaching nuts.
Remove the guage pin (3/16 drill bit) and check operation of the shift linkage. :D

The bushings in the linkage could be worn out and allowing some sloppy movement. After checking all the pieces for wear and replacing what is needed, I would follow the procedure that jz explained above.

Mine will do the same thing if I make sloppy shifts. If you make sure you are in neutral before going to second, you shouldn't have any problems though. It's trying to shift 1st to 2nd without going through neutral that will get you stuck every time.

Good point. If your cab has sagged, then your column is no longer in the same position relative to the tranny.
(Somehow that didn't come out right? :hmm: )
