NP435 Swap

Post by Belvedeer »

Okay I've got a 68 F100 4x4 and so I'm anting to swap out the stock 4-speed trans and hi only transfer case. I've gotten some good suggestions about going with the NP435/NP205 combo.

Recently a buddy of mine let me know he had a Dodge NP435/NP205 combo in a truck he has had for some time.

My question is... could I get these to fit relatively easy onto my 390 bell housing?

Also I know the Dodge NP205 have the right handed lever and Ford's have the Left. Is it possible to still use the NP205 from the Dodge, but maybe somehow flip it to work properly in my truck?

Any help is greatly appreciated as I can't pass the price up (Free) if it can be done.

The NP435 will bolt up to the housing you have. Some Dodge 435s have a smaller granny (1st gear) the the Ford application 435s. Just to let know.

When you say left and right hand lever, does that mean its also a pass or driver drop front yoke?

isnt the input shaft on some year Dodges a longer length than the Fords? Might be something else to check on.

I apologize, I should have said. The current transfer case is the left hand drop. The one in the Dodge is a right hand drop. So I asusme I wouldn't be able to use it?

I apologize if I'm not sure how ot say it quite right, but I'm far form a transmission and transfer case expert. But I've been researching the net like crazy to gather all the info I can.

Yes, you are correct Mike. I forgot.

Here is some info quoted from http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/np435.htm

"New Process 435 Transmission
The 435 is an excellent, heavy-duty truck transmission designed and used in ½, 3/4 and 1+ ton trucks. It is a well-built transmission and remains easy to locate and generally inexpensive to buy and maintain. The strength, relatively short size and the gearing of the transmission make it a good choice for a variety of situations.

The NP435 was made by New Process Gear from 1964 to 1993. They are found primarily in Ford trucks from 1966 to 1992 and Dodge trucks from 1964 to 1993. They also had limited distribution in GM & Chevrolet trucks from 1968-1972.

Identification
This transmission is 10.8" long and features an aluminum top cover that is retained by eight bolts. The NP435 case is of cast iron.

The Ford NP435 has a 1-1/16" diameter, ten spline input shaft that has a stick-out of 6-1/2" from the front face of the transmission. The pilot tip of the transmission measures .668". The front bearing retainer flange measures 4.850" and the bearing retainer tube is 1.430" in diameter. The front bolt pattern is the symmetrical Ford "butterfly" pattern; roughly 8-1/2" wide by 6-5/16" tall. The input shaft stick-out length is 6-1/2".

The Dodge NP435 has a 23 spline input shaft with an 8-3/8" stickout.

The shifting pattern for the 435 is in the standard "H" pattern with reverse gear being to the right side, and down.

Features
The NP435 is a top loaded, top shifting truck style transmission. The NP435 enjoys a very low compound gear at 6.68:1 and as such it is a popular choice for those wanting a very low crawling gear. Note that some Dodge versions of this transmission offered a taller first gear of 4.56-to-1.

The NP435 features a power-take-off (PTO) port on the passenger side of the case.

Transfer Case Adaptability
This transmission makes an excellent conversion transmission due to its adaptability into most Jeeps. Both 2wd and 4wd versions of the NP435 can be used equally well, and there are no inherent advantages to either one once you have installed our adapter assembly."

you know, you aren't too far from me, and I am getting ready to pull a 435/205 combo (at least thats what I think is in there :hmm: ) from my '80 F-150 parts truck. It isn't as good of a deal as your buddy's, but it might be worth your while.
PM me if interested.

As another note of praise for the NP 435 my Flatbed has one with a completely shot input bearing and reverse shaft bearing and it still runs everyday. Talk about tough. I am looking for another NP 435 that I can rebuild and then swap out trannies.
